Owen Sound Invites Community Input on Key Planning Policy Updates

The City of Owen Sound is pleased to announce a series of important policy updates that will help guide the city's growth and development. As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability and responsible planning, the City is inviting public feedback on proposed changes to three foundational planning documents: the Official Plan, the Zoning By-law, and new Urban Design Guidelines.

  • Official Plan Review:
The City is reviewing its Official Plan—the blueprint for Owen Sound’s future growth—to ensure alignment with recent amendments to the Planning Act and Provincial Planning Statements. Updates will also address regional needs and include housekeeping improvements for clarity and ease of implementation.
  • Zoning By-law Update:
The Zoning By-law will be updated to reflect the revised Official Plan and incorporate additional amendments. The Discussion Paper on the OurCity Project page provides a detailed list of proposed changes.
  • Urban Design Guidelines Development:
The City is creating a new set of Urban Design Guidelines to support high-quality, well-coordinated development that respects Owen Sound’s character. These guidelines will address elements such as site layout, building design, and landscaping.

The City encourages residents to share their thoughts and help shape these planning updates. Community members can visit the online community engagement page at OurCity.OwenSound.ca/Planning to:

  • Access background materials and draft reports
  • Complete a community survey to share input on priorities such as growth, environmental sustainability, and community design

In-person community engagement will also take place this summer. The City will host an open house where the public can meet with staff and project team members, ask questions, and provide feedback. The date and details will be shared on the OurCity project page.

As required by the Planning Act, a formal public meeting will follow the open house to offer another opportunity for community input.

Public feedback will play a vital role in shaping the final versions of these documents, ensuring they reflect the needs and aspirations of the Owen Sound community. Visit the OurCity project page to learn more and stay up to date on upcoming engagement opportunities.

The City of Owen Sound thanks residents for their continued involvement in planning for a bright and sustainable future.
