External Relations and Investment Attraction Action Plan

The City of Owen Sound has had a very active start to the year as we begin implementing the External Relations and Investment Attraction Action Plan, an 18-month implementation strategy to kick-start economic growth by investing in stakeholder relationships, capacity building, and opportunity generating initiatives.

Highlights

  • The City of Owen Sound hosted an Energy Innovators Leadership Forum breakfast on Tuesday, March 24 in collaboration with the Owen Sound & District Chamber of Commerce. Opening remarks were provided by Shannon Douglas of Candu Energy, an AtkinsRéalis company. Panelists Bryce Conacher (Hydrogen Optimized), Chad Richards (Bruce Power), Bill Walker (BWXT Canada), and Herb Shields (TC Energy) spoke to regional opportunities across the the tri-county Clean Energy Frontier
  • In collaboration with Georgian College and Grey County, the City has initiated work to establish a Community Impact Lab at Sydenham Campus and collected 14 letters demonstrating widespread, cross-sector support for a federal research grant opportunity in partnership with Georgian’s Department of Social Innovation.
  • Tours of the proposed ‘innovation lending library’ Community Impact Lab space will be offered as part of the Healthy Communities Conference on April 27-28. Registration is now open and sponsorship opportunities are available.
  • Save the Date! The City of Owen Sound is an official Canadian Innovation Week partner and will celebrate local innovators May 11-15, 2026.
  • We are working closely with Grey County on a number of investment readiness projects, including a submission in response to a request by Invest Ontario's site selection team, grant applications for matched funding to support feasibility studies, and the Team Grey Memorandum of Understanding promoting collaboration on economic development initiatives.
  • The City provided a pre-budget submission to the Ontario government advocating for equitable access to digital library services, stable funding for rural college campuses, fairness in police funding, and reducing the impacts of omnibus legislation on rural and small urban municipalities. The province has since announced a new funding model for colleges.
  • Staff will attend the Great Lakes & St Lawrence Cities Initiative Annual Conference in Hamilton (May 6-8) and the Canadian Radiotheranostics Leaders’ Summit in Toronto (May 25-26).
