Mulch and Screened Compost for Pick Up
Available for pick-up while quantities last, during operating hours. You are required to bring your own shovel to load your materials. Please wear proper footwear.
Mulch - usually available in mid-to-late Summer - please follow us on Facebook for updated schedule of availability.
Screened soil compost - usually available in late Spring - please follow us on Facebook for updated schedule of availability.
It is recommended when picking up screened compost that before planting in your garden you mix it with soil as compost is extremely rich in nutrients and organic materials.
Backyard composting is a natural and environmentally friendly way to dispose of organic waste, such as fruit and vegetable scraps, leaves, grass clippings, and coffee grounds. By composting at home, you can reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills, and create a nutrient-rich soil amendment that can be used in your garden or lawn.
The City of Owen Sound has a weekly Green Bin program for many households within the City. To learn more about the Green Bin program, please click here.
Residents can also divert some organic material from your household garbage for backyard composting. The City has kitchen containers ($7.12) and backyard composters ($35.00) that can be purchased at the following locations year round:
Your backyard composter will come with a detailed instruction book.

Backyard Composters:

There are many benefits to backyard composting, including:
You can add a wide variety of organic materials to your backyard compost pile.
These include:
It is important to maintain a balance between nitrogen-rich materials (sometimes called "green" materials) and carbon-rich materials (sometimes called "brown" materials) in your compost pile. A good rule of thumb is to use a ratio of about 3 parts brown materials to 1 part green materials.
You should also avoid adding materials that are high in fat, oil, or animal products, as these can attract pests and create unpleasant odors.
In addition to adding materials to your compost pile, you should also make sure to regularly turn and water the pile to ensure that it decomposes properly. By following these simple guidelines, you can create a rich and nutrient-dense compost that will help to nourish your garden and reduce waste.
While there are many organic materials that can be added to a backyard composter, there are also some things that should not be added. These include:
Commercial Business Registration
The Leaf and Yard Waste site is exclusively for residents of Owen Sound, Georgian Bluffs, and Municipality of Meaford, and proof of residency may be required.
Businesses that deliver materials on behalf of City and participating municipality residents must register by completing a declaration confirming that materials originate from eligible residents and be prepared to provide proof upon request.
Please note that the City is currently reviewing a proposed seasonal contractor fee of $200. This fee is subject to Council approval and, if adopted, would take effect for the 2026 season.
