The City of Owen Sound is committed to offering persons with disabilities the opportunity to pursue healthy and balanced lifestyles. This commitment extends to residents, visitors, and employees with visible and/or non-visible disabilities.

The City affirms its commitment to meet the requirements of the Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2001 (ODA)Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA), and the Ontario Human Rights Code.

On February 1, 2024, the City of Owen Sound joined the Grey County Joint Accessibility Advisory Committee. The committee advises Grey County Council and staff members, as well as participating municipalities, on ways to identify, prevent, and remove barriers from municipal services, by-laws, policies, programs, and facilities. The committee is formed in compliance with the AODA and ODA to include 50% plus one of people with disabilities. Other members include political representatives, staff, and interested members of the public.

City Council has adopted a Multi-Year Accessibility Plan, 2024-2028Transit Accessibility Plan as well as Annual Status Reports which outline the City of Owen Sound's strategy to prevent and remove barriers as well as its priorities related to accessibility.

The City of Owen Sound is committed to training all staff and volunteers in accessible customer service, other Ontario accessibility standards, and aspects of the Ontario Human Rights Code that relate to persons with disabilities.

In addition, we will train:

  1. all persons who participate in developing our policies; and
  2. all other persons who provide goods, services or facilities on behalf of the City.

Training of our employees and volunteers on accessibility relates to their specific roles. We train every person as soon as practicable after being hired and provide training in respect of any changes to the policies.

The City maintains records of the training provided, including the dates on which the training was provided and the number of individuals to whom it was provided. These training documents are available upon request.

Documents are available in alternate formats or with communication support, on request, such as print, electronic, audio, large font, text only, or as a plain language summary.

The City will consult with the person making the request to determine the suitability of the format or communication support. We will provide the alternate format in a timely manner and at no additional cost. To request information in an alternate format, please contact the City Clerk's Division:
