The Tom Thomson Art Gallery is currently restructuring our in-person Educational Program offerings to better serve our schools, students and community. We will be offering students from grades K to 12 engaging in-person tours of our Tom Thomson exhibition as well our contemporary exhibitions with options of an accompanying studio activity. We are focused on creating interactive, impactful, and memorable experiences for all of our school visitors.

All of our educational programs are developed to meet the Ontario Ministry of Education Curriculum standards with strong connections to Visual Arts, Language Arts, Environmental Education, Social Studies and more!

As a dynamic place where artists and audiences can meet and flourish, the Tom Thomson Art Gallery provides enriching experiences through art for a range of visitors of all ages. Exhibitions are accompanied by informative materials and scheduled tours are conducted by trained docents — all designed to bring a new dimension to visitors’ enjoyment and appreciation of art and its creation.

The Tom Thomson Art Gallery, in partnership with the Reach Centre Grey Bruce and Georgian Bay School of the Arts, invites local artists who self-identify as neurodivergent to submit up to 5 artworks to be showcased in a juried art exhibition at the Art Gallery from September 21, 2024 – January 4, 2025. The theme of this group show is “community” and artwork should offer individual interpretation of this topic. This project aims to unite artists, break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and highlight the immense talent and creative energy of neurodivergent artists in our region.

There will be a panel of 6 Jurors:

Aidan Ware, Director and Chief Curator, Tom Thomson Art Gallery

Jennifer Miller, Executive Director, Reach Centre Grey Bruce

Morag Budgeon, Executive Director, Georgian Bay School of the Arts

Marc Matei, Art Facilitator, Reach Centre Grey Bruce

Copper tooling is a captivating art form that has been practiced for centuries. Join internationally acclaimed artist Michael Belmore as he leads an introductory workshop on copper tooling in our TOM studio, manipulating copper sheets to create intricate designs and patterns inspired by nature. Individuals, families, or groups of all ages are invited to take part in this public workshop exploring the incredible properties and artistic capabilities of copper. Belmore will provide a step-by-step guide to copper tooling, helping participants to understand the techniques, tools, and materials needed to create their own copper ripple artwork.

Belmore will discuss his approach to art marking and give participants a better understanding of the significance of copper in his work. Copper, drawing, and tools await you! There is limited space for this workshop (20 participants maximum), so sign up early!
