The Arts & Culture Award winners are selected by a jury of past winners. Jury members are appointed by a request from the Events and Activation Coordinator.

The City of Owen Sound hosts an annual celebration where nominees are recognized for their contributions and an original work of art is given to the winner in each category. Every approved nominee is invited to the awards ceremony and receives a Certificate of Recognition.

The Awards are a public forum in which the community recognizes its cultural strength and diversity. This informs the nomination process. The integrity of the Awards is maintained by the following criteria, and nominees are assessed by the jury based on:

  • Artistic Excellence: Demonstrates originality, creativity, and technical skill.

  • Impact: Engages, inspires, or benefits audiences and the community.

  • Innovation: Pushes boundaries or explores new ideas, formats, or media.

  • Relevance: Reflects contemporary issues, cultural values, or social resonance.

  • Professionalism & Vision: Shows dedication, leadership, and a clear artistic vision.

The jury reserves the right not to present awards in every category. The jury also reserves the right to reallocate submissions into categories that they deem to be more appropriate. In some cases, City staff may also contact a nominator to recommend a different award category for a nomination.

The Volunteer Awards Selection Committee is the members of the Community Services Committee.

  • It is recommended that members of the Selection Committee consider whether or not they are in a conflict of interest situation when a member of their immediate family is nominated. Immediate family includes: partner, parent, child, grandparent, grandchild and siblings.
  • The Selection Committee will evaluate the applications, taking into consideration the guidelines laid out in the Criteria above.
  • All nominations received are not necessarily approved.
  • The Selection Committee's recommendations will be forwarded to City Council for final approval of the selected volunteers prior to the successful candidates being notified.
  • Only the individuals who are selected will be notified.
  • The Selection Committee will review criteria on an annual basis.

A nomination will be considered complete when the following have been submitted.

For paper copy submissions, please reach out to the Events & Activation Coordinator through email events@owensound.ca or by calling 519-376-4440 Ext. 1237
