Where the Willows Weep and Orchids Dream is a biomorphic, immersive installation by emerging artist Bianca Artemida Nam, that unfolds as a surreal marshland inspired by the escarpments and flora of Grey and Dufferin Counties. From the periphery of this swamp emerges a two-dimensional organism that breathes among the vegetation while undergoing metamorphosis, shifting in colour and form as it transforms.
Nam’s practice centers on collage as a process of rebirth and transformation, with each work treated as a living organism. She layers analogue and digital media with specimens found in nature, which are then animated and projected into the gallery, extending the installation into space and drawing viewers into its shifting, immersive terrain. Weeping willows and orchids mingle with projections and textured elements, dissolving the boundaries between nature and technology and evoking entities that feel both natural and otherworldly. The installation harmonizes a variety of materials including tree branches, synthetic yarns, preserved plants and flowers, vintage magazines, notebooks, wire, and hand-crafted paper flowers with projections, animation, and sound. Together, these elements coalesce into a single, large-scale, dreamlike collage, inviting reflection on metamorphosis, adaptation, and the ways we inhabit and imagine the natural world.
About the artist:
Bianca Artemida Nam (she/her) is a Canadian artist based in Tara, Ontario and recently received her BFA with a major in Drawing and Painting, from the Ontario College of Art and Design University in Toronto, Ontario.
Her practice focuses on the re-using and rebirth of images through methodologies like; collage, installation and painting in an expanded field. Nam’s work is deeply influenced by outdoor scenery and the cross pollination of analogue and digital medias; combining both synthetic and organic to illustrate a metamorphosis with each collage and installation. Similar to that of a plant, Nam's process is rooted in various states of being; making analogue, hand-cut collages using National Geographic magazine images and pressed plants, to using Photoshop to create an abundance of dynamically vivid, digital collages. Nam views each of her collages as individual organisms. Though abstract in form, the collages take on various shapes, ranging from insects like butterflies and mantises to floral-like entities that dwell and flourish in the swamp-like landscapes created.
