Canada Day Facility Hours and Cooling Centre Information in Owen Sound
With Canada Day celebrations beginning tomorrow and hot temperatures set for this week, the City of Owen Sound is sharing helpful information about facility closures, adjusted hours, and public cooling centres.
Affected Canada Day Hours
City Hall (Public Cooling Centre):
Closed Wednesday, July 1. Regular hours of operation resume at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 2.
Public Works:
Closed Wednesday, July 1. Regular hours of operation resume at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 2.
Transit:
Owen Sound Transit (OST) and Mobility Transit will not be running on Wednesday, July 1.
Guelph Owen Sound Transit (GOST) will remain operating its regular schedule every day.
The Transit Terminal will be open 7 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday to allow for access to washrooms and GOST.
Waste Management:
The Transfer Station is closed on July 1, 2026.
There is no waste collection on Wednesday, July 1, as scheduled in the 2026 Waste Calendar.
The Leaf & Yard Waste Compost Site will be open regular hours, 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library (Public Cooling Centre):
The library is closed on Wednesday, July 1. It is open regular hours as of 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 2.
Tom Thomson Art Gallery and Owen Sound Tourism Services:
The Tom Thomson Art Gallery and Owen Sound Tourism Services will be closed on Wednesday, July 1. Regular hours resume at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 2.
TOM and Tourism staff will be on site during Canada Day celebrations at Kelso Beach at Nawash Park. Stop by the booth to learn more about local programs, upcoming events, and to pick up some great Owen Sound merchandise.
Parks and Open Space Facilities:
The public washrooms at Harrison Park and Kelso Beach at Nawash Park will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Kelso Beach at Nawash Park will be home to Canada Day celebrations.
The Greenwood Cemetery Office at 190 2nd Ave East will be closed on Wednesday, July 1 and will re-open on Thursday, July 2 at 8:30 a.m.
Recreational Facilities:
The Julie McArthur Regional Recreation Centre will be open for regular hours (with rentals) on Wednesday, July 1 beginning at 2 p.m.
The Bayshore Community Centre (Public Cooling Centre) will be closed on Wednesday, July 1.
The YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce (Public Cooling Centre in the shared corridor between rink and YMCA) is closed on Wednesday, July 1.
Owen Sound Police:
Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For non-emergencies, please call 519-376-1234. For emergencies, call 911.
Owen Sound Fire & Emergency Services:
Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For non-emergencies, please call 519-376-2512. For emergencies, call 911.
By-law Enforcement:
Complaints or questions can be submitted online anytime. Regular By-Law hours will resume on Thursday, July 2 at 8:30 a.m.
Cooling Reminders for Hot Weather
Water Refill Stations:
Remember your reusable water bottle while on the go! Municipal tap water is clean and safe to drink, a great value for your money, and an environmentally friendly and healthy choice.
Water Refill Stations are conveniently available in these City facilities during regular business hours:
- Bayshore Community Centre
- Julie McArthur Regional Rec Centre/YMCA Shared Corridor
- City Hall
- The Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library
- Tom Thomson Art Gallery
Outdoor Water Play:
Residents with small children are reminded that the Good Cheer Splash Pad at Kelso Beach at Nawash Park is open daily.
Additionally, the Harrison Park Pool is open! There are free, sponsored swims throughout the summer season during the following times:
- Wednesdays, 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- Thursdays, 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- Sundays, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Tips for staying cool in warm temperatures:
- Stay in an air-conditioned indoor location as much as you can
- Drink plenty of fluids, even if you don’t feel thirsty
- Schedule outdoor activities carefully
- Wear loose, lightweight, light-coloured clothing and sunscreen
- Manage your energy and pace yourself in your activities
- Take cool showers or baths to cool down
- Check on a friend or neighbour and have someone do the same for you
- Never leave children or pets in cars
