Seasonal Load Restrictions Coming into Effect March 1 

The City of Owen Sound, Public Works and Engineering department is notifying the public that effective Sunday, March 1, select roadways within the City will be under a reduced load period (maximum 5 tonnes per axle). This seasonal restriction is activated in alignment with Grey County and other local municipalities due to milder weather conditions at this time of year. 

The thawing of frost lenses within the road structure results in weakened roads due to pockets of water or air within the road base.  Excess loading by heavy vehicles on weakened roads accelerates damage and deterioration of the road.  

Once the freeze-thaw cycles have resolved and the roads have been deemed structurally sound, load restrictions may be lifted. Load restrictions are typically in place from March 1 to April 30, but dates may be adjusted depending on the weather conditions. 

The affected roads are shown in red on this map on the City’s website.

Exemptions to the load restrictions are made on a case-by-case basis. To apply for an exemption to the load restrictions, please make your request in writing to:

  • The proposed date(s) 

  •  Type of materials being hauled 

  •  Proposed Haul Route 

  •  Load weights 

  •  Number of loads to be transported

  • Half-load restrictions are in effect beginning March 1st and serve as a way to protect roads and road beds from being damaged.
