Balancing Tradition and Public Safety with New Derby Camping Rules for Fall Fishing Derbies in Owen Sound

To support a cleaner, safer, and more organized experience during Owen Sound’s popular fall fishing derbies, the City is launching a new Fish Derby Camping (FDC) permit program for 2025. This initiative aims to regulate the use of public harbourfront spaces during the Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular and The Sound Charity Shootout, while addressing past concerns about unregulated camping, garbage, and public safety.

Under the updated 2025 by-law, individuals wishing to camp with RVs or trailers along the east and west harbourfront areas must now purchase and display a valid permit. Derby Camping will be permitted from Wednesday, August 20, at noon until Monday, September 1, at noon, and is restricted to approved locations outlined in the City’s Derby Camping map.  Each vehicle in the designated camping spaces must have and display a valid FDC pass, tents are not permitted.

Permit sales open June 17, 2025, and are available through the City’s website or at City Hall. Space is limited, and permits will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis.  A valid Salmon Spectacular Derby or The Sound Charity Shootout registration number is required to obtain an FDC permit.

In addition to the two harbourfront locations, limited numbers of Derby Camping spaces are permitted at the Westside Boat Launch and Georgian Shores Marina

The Fish Derby Camping Program is part of Owen Sound’s commitment to responsible public space management and continued support for community traditions. For more information about Fish Derby Camping or to apply for a permit, visit OwenSound.ca/FDC

  • For the two locations on the west and east harbourfront, the City will be issuing approximately 115 passes total.
