Voter Information Letter Reminders

Residents have reported receiving Voter Information Letters (VILs) addressed to individuals who no longer reside at their property. This is common across Ontario, as voter registration records are not always updated when someone moves.

If you receive a VIL that is not addressed to you, please write “Return to Sender” on the envelope and place it back in the mail through Canada Post at no cost, as you would with any other misdirected mail. Residents can also drop off surplus VILS at City Hall or an Election Centre. Returned VILs help the City identify outdated voter information and provide updates to Elections Ontario to improve the accuracy of the voters’ list.

Residents should also be aware that a VIL contains only one of the credentials required to vote. A VIL alone does not provide access to another person’s ballot, as additional information is required to authenticate an elector before they can vote.

Residents are reminded that it is illegal to open mail that is not addressed to them. It is also an offence to use another person’s voter credentials, attempt to vote on someone else's behalf, or cast a ballot if you are not eligible to vote in the City.

Haven't Received Your Letter?

Residents who have not received their VIL by Thursday, October 8 should not worry. Eligible electors can still vote.

If your letter has not arrived, or if your voter information needs to be updated, visit City Hall or an Election Centre for assistance. Election staff can confirm eligibility, update voter information, add eligible residents to the Voters' List, and provide voting credentials.

Not receiving a Voter Information Letter does not mean you cannot vote.

Eligible electors can be added to the Voters' List or update their information right up until voting closes on October 26. Election staff are available to help ensure every eligible voter can participate.

Residents are encouraged to visit OwenSoundVotes.ca to check the Voters’ List, find Election Centre schedules, and access general election information.
