Community Partnership Drives New Turf Floor at Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre
A noticeable upgrade is now in place at one of Owen Sound’s most well-used recreation facilities. The City of Owen Sound, in partnership with Owen Sound Northstars Lacrosse, has installed a high-quality artificial turf floor at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre, enhancing the arena floor’s functionality, supporting athlete safety, and opening the door to new sporting and economic opportunities for the community.
The project was approved through the City’s 2025 capital budget update following a deputation from Owen Sound Junior and Minor Lacrosse and a recommendation from the Community Services Committee. Owen Sound’s Lacrosse organizations played a key role in bringing the project forward, coordinating logistics, raising funds, and committing to the turf as a long‑term partner. The City’s contribution of $25,000, matches that of Owen Sound Lacrosse, with additional funding support pursued through grants and the Tourism Development Fund. This investment represents both a significant improvement to the Bayshore and a standout example of what can be achieved through strong community collaboration.
The turf will be used primarily for box lacrosse, with minor, junior and senior lacrosse teams playing out of the Bayshore. Additionally, the turf space is available for compatible community rentals, such as indoor soccer, helping maximize use of the facility. To protect the surface, food and drink will not be permitted on the turf.
The turf measures the full length and width of the Bayshore arena floor and was previously used briefly by the Albany FireWolves of the National Lacrosse League at their practice facility. Upon delivery, the turf became a City asset and is anticipated to have a lifespan of 15 to 20 years or more with seasonal use. Ongoing maintenance time is expected to be less than maintaining the existing concrete floor.
