City Updates to the Short-Term Rental By-law Support Tourism and Community Safety

Owen Sound City Council has approved updates to the Short-Term Rental (STR) Licensing By-law aimed at growth of local tourism accommodations in the downtown core without affecting residential communities. 

Online Application Form  

Applicants are now able to submit their forms and accompanying documents online through the City of Owen Sound’s website. This update will help support new and existing STR Owners and Applicants by streamlining the process for both new applications and renewals. Application fees can be paid in person at City Hall or by mail to 808 2nd Avenue East, Owen Sound, ON N4K 2H4.  

STR Licences for all categories are valid for one year from the date of approval.  
 

Extended Rental Season 

The maximum number of rental nights allowed per calendar year has increased from 180 to 240 nights, allowing operators more opportunities to serve visitors throughout the year. 

 
Commercial STR Licence 

A new licensing category (C1) has been established for residences within the downtown commercial zone that are not the owner’s primary residence. This is to support downtown businesses and owners with increased tourism numbers. There is no maximum number of nights for C1 licences.  

 
Human Trafficking Awareness 

In partnership with Grey and Bruce Counties and the Owen Sound Police, all operator and visitor information packages now include resources on human trafficking. This initiative aims to help inform operators, residents and visitors.
