City of Owen Sound Reminds Residents of Open-Air Burning Regulations

The City of Owen Sound is reminding residents to follow important safety regulations regarding open-air burning as warmer weather approaches.

Under the City’s Open Air Burning By-law (2022-051), strict rules are in place to protect public safety, reduce fire risk, and minimize nuisance from smoke and odour.

Open-air burning within the city is highly restricted. Residents are advised that:

·       Burning of yard waste, leaves, or household garbage is strictly prohibited.

·       Only small, controlled fires for recreational, cooking, or ceremonial purposes are permitted.

·       Fires must be constantly supervised and a means of extinguishment, such as a hose or fire extinguisher, must be readily available.

·       Only clean, dry firewood or approved fuels may be used.

Additional restrictions apply throughout the city:

·       Open-air burning is not permitted in the downtown core or on multi-residential properties, including apartments and townhouses.

·       Fires must be kept small, contained, and set back from structures and property lines.

·       Weather conditions such as wind and dry conditions must be considered to prevent fire spread.

Residents are reminded that failure to comply with the by-law may result in enforcement action and fines.

The City encourages residents to consider environmentally responsible alternatives for yard waste disposal, including municipal composting services.
