City of Owen Sound Begins 2026 Road Resurfacing

The City of Owen Sound will begin resurfacing road segments as part of its 2026 Road Resurfacing Program next week. This program reinforces the City’s commitment to building and maintaining infrastructure that supports a safe, connected, and efficient community. 

Work is scheduled to begin on May 11, 2026, and is expected to be completed by June 6, 2026. The project includes adjustments to underground infrastructure, milling of existing pavement, installation of new hot mix asphalt, improvements to drainage, and the application of new pavement markings. 

This annual investment reflects the City’s Vision 2050 Strategic Plan priority of being a community where infrastructure and amenities are well maintained. By renewing critical roadways, the City continues to support “a city that moves”—ensuring residents, businesses, and visitors can travel safely and reliably throughout Owen Sound. 

While every effort will be made to minimize inconvenience, temporary traffic disruptions are expected throughout the duration of the project. Residents living on affected streets are asked to avoid on-street parking during construction, as parked vehicles can delay progress and limit access for crews. 

The following roadways will be resurfaced as part of the 2026 program: 

• 4th Street East from 4th Avenue East to 5th Avenue East 

• 28th Avenue East from 18th Street East to 20th Street East 

• 7th Avenue East from 7th Street A East to 8th Street East 

• 6th Avenue East 100 block to 200 block 

• 7th Street East from 7th Avenue East to 8th Avenue East 

• 8th Street A East from 7th Avenue East to Cul-de-sac 

• 15th Street A East from 8th Avenue East to 9th Avenue East 

• 14th Street East from 2nd Avenue East to 4th Avenue East 

• 5th Avenue East from 18th Street East to North End 

• 5th Avenue East form 4th Street East to 6th Street East 

• 11th Street East from 10th Avenue East to 11th Avenue East 

• 13th Avenue East from 11th Street East to 15th Street B East 

• 7th Avenue West 14th Street W to Bridge 

• 11th Street East from 12th Avenue East to 13th Avenue East  

Additional roads may be added to the current project list, subject to available budget and operational considerations. At the time of release, assessments are ongoing to determine feasibility, prioritization, and resource allocation. Any updates regarding new roadway inclusions will be communicated as decisions are finalized.

Quick Facts: 

• The City of Owen Sound uses the Pavement Condition Index (PCI) to determine which roads will be resurfaced each year. The index primarily considers the type, severity, and extent of pavement distress, along with factors such as pavement age.  

• Public Works and Engineering staff perform preventative maintenance as well as spot repairs on roads with minimal wear through the spring and fall seasons.
