Celebrate Victoria Day Weekend safely in Owen Sound

With the Victoria Day long weekend beginning today, Owen Sound Fire Department is reminding residents to put safety first when using fireworks and sparklers. If you are planning a backyard display, please use caution and be considerate of your neighbours.

In the City of Owen Sound, the use of fireworks is regulated under Fireworks By-law No. 2022-050. Low-hazard fireworks are permitted without a permit between 7:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. on approved holidays, including Victoria Day.

Fireworks are not permitted on municipal or public property without authorization, and must not be used in the downtown no burn district, on properties that are multi-unit or semi-detached, and in restricted areas, including within 100 metres of hospitals, nursing homes, group homes, or places where flammable materials are stored or sold.

Fireworks safety tips

Don’ts:

  • Do not discharge fireworks on municipal property, public parks, or open spaces without permission.

  • Do not discharge fireworks on highways or roads.

  • Do not light fireworks in windy conditions.

  • Do not attempt to re-light a defective firework.

  • Do not hold a lit firework in your hand.

Do’s:

  • Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

  • Use a stable discharge base, such as a bucket filled with sand.

  • Set up fireworks in a clear, open area on your property, away from buildings and obstacles.

  • Follow label instructions for safe viewing distances.

  • Ensure only responsible adults handle fireworks.

  • Keep water or a fire extinguisher nearby.

  • Wait at least 30 minutes before approaching a firework that did not go off, then soak it in water.

  • Store fireworks in a cool, dry place out of reach of children.

  • Clean up all debris after use.

Sparkler safety

Sparklers can reach extremely high temperatures and should always be handled with care:

  • Children must always be supervised when using sparklers; they are not recommended for children under five.

  • Wear protective gloves and avoid loose-fitting clothing.

  • Hold sparklers at arm’s length and light one at a time.

  • Keep a safe distance from others—never wave sparklers near people.

  • Place used sparklers in a bucket of water or sand immediately after use, as they remain hot for a long time.

Be considerate of your neighbours

Not everyone enjoys fireworks, and some residents and pets may be sensitive to the noise:

  • Let your neighbours know if you are planning to set off fireworks on your property.

  • Be mindful of pets and individuals who may be affected by loud noises.

  • Only discharge fireworks during permitted times (7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.).

  • Clean up debris and dispose of it safely.

Have a safe and enjoyable weekend as we kick off the summer season in the Scenic City!
