Structure Fire at Vacant Building on Superior Street

On July 22, 2025, at 12:30 a.m., Owen Sound Fire and Emergency Services responded to a report of smoke in the area of 6th Street East and 9th Avenue East.

Firefighters responded to the call and found a two-storey building on fire. The structure was fully involved. The building appeared not to have been in use for several years. It was a complete loss, and demolition was required to make the scene safe.

The building was approximately 4,800 sq ft, and the loss is estimated at $500,000. The building was one of nine vacant buildings on a commercial property formerly occupied by Barton Feeders. The follow-up investigation revealed evidence of forced entry and unlawful occupancy in several of the buildings.

A total of 11 firefighters responded to the call. Crews were able to extinguish the fire quickly. The Owen Sound Fire Department, Building Officials, and By-law Enforcement are remaining on the scene to assist with the ongoing investigation and ensure the buildings are made secure.

A firefighter sustained minor injuries during suppression efforts. The firefighter was treated at the scene and attended the hospital for follow-up.  He was later released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
