Owen Sound Introduces New Fish Derby Camping Permit System

The City of Owen Sound is implementing a new Fish Derby Camping (FDC) permit system in 2025 to help balance the use of harbourfront spaces during two major local events — the Salmon Spectacular and The Sound Charity Shootout. The new system is designed to maintain safety, cleanliness, and public access while continuing to support long-standing fishing and event traditions.

Under the new permitting process, approximately 85 passes will be available for purchase starting Tuesday, June 17, either online at OwenSound.ca/FDC or in person at City Hall. Each permit costs $150 per vehicle and provides access to a specified waterfront camping locations from noon on Wednesday, August 20, through to noon on Monday, September 1, 2025.

Applicants may obtain a maximum of two vehicle passes. The initial licence must be for a camping vehicle. If the camping vehicle is not self-propelled (e.g., a towable trailer), the applicant may also apply for a second licence for the passenger vehicle used for towing. Passes are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Both the camping vehicle and passenger vehicle require a pass.

Derby Camping is permitted in four designated areas along the City’s harbourfront, outlined on the map below:

  • A1: East Harbour Wall
  • A2: West Harbour Wall
  • A3: West Side Boat Launch (Passes can be purchased through their independent website.)
  • A4: Georgian Shores Marina (Passes can be purchased through their independent website.)

Permit holders must be registered participants in either the Salmon Spectacular or The Sound Charity Shootout. By regulating use through a formal permitting process, the City aims to enhance public safety, minimize environmental impact, and ensure continued access to shared spaces during the high-traffic event period.

Revenue generated from the permit fees will support enforcement and overall site management throughout the duration of the fishing derbies.
