Household Hazardous Waste and Goods Exchange Days Coming Up This Month

Household Hazardous Waste

The fourth of eight Household Hazardous Waste Day events of 2025 is this Saturday, July 12! The event will be held at the Owen Sound Public Works Facility (1900 20th Street East) from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The remaining schedule of Household Hazardous Waste Days in 2025 includes the following Saturdays: August 16, September 13, October 4, and October 25.

When attending the events, and to help keep the line moving as quickly as possible, residents are asked to bring valid ID indicating that their home address is in one of the participating municipalities listed below and bring a filled-out Household Hazardous Waste Form. The form can be printed at home and is available on the City’s website at OwenSound.ca/WasteForm.

This very popular program is open to residents from the following participating partner municipalities:

  • City of Owen Sound

  • Township of Chatsworth

  • Township of Georgian Bluffs

  • Municipality of Grey Highlands

  • Municipality of Meaford

A full list of accepted materials is available at OwenSound.ca/Waste. Please note that the following is not accepted:

  • Infectious wastes (such as syringes)

  • Radioactive wastes

  • Explosives (ammunition, flares, gunpowder)

  • Unidentified waste (unlabeled items)

  • Improperly contained waste (compromised containers, missing lids, leaking materials)

Residents are reminded that improperly contained waste, such as compromised containers, missing lids, and leaking materials, should never be transported. They pose a health and safety risk and will not be accepted. Before bringing the original container to the site, safely place it in a clean, labelled container.

Hazardous waste from commercial, industrial or farm operations cannot be accepted.

Goods Exchange

The second of three Goods Exchange Days of 2025 takes place the following Saturday, July 19.

Goods Exchange Day events help divert unwanted but reusable items and materials from landfill disposal. It is also a great way to get rid of unwanted stuff without the hassle of hosting a garage sale.

City residents are invited to place unwanted but still usable items at the curb in front of their homes after 8 a.m. on Saturday, July 19. If you are looking for something, tour the city and pick up items you can reuse.

Popular items include furniture, books, tools, toys, and small appliances. All unclaimed items must be brought back inside by 6 p.m. To identify items as part of Goods Exchange Day, residents are asked to tie a white plastic bag to one of the items.

Drivers are reminded to use caution and watch for pedestrians.
