City of Owen Sound and YMCA Partner on Major Facility Improvements

The City of Owen Sound is proud to announce the beginning of a major roof renovation project at the Julie McArthur Regional Recreation Centre, home to the YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce. This project, co-led by the City and the YMCA, highlights the importance of maintaining and investing in City-owned infrastructure that supports community wellness and recreation. 

Set-up and mobilization will begin the week of July 14, with full construction commencing on July 21. The $850,000 capital investment will see the replacement of 40,000 square feet of roofing, upgraded insulation, and new roof membranes designed to extend the life of the facility for at least 20 years. Roof drains will also be upgraded, and skylights replaced—improving both safety and energy efficiency for the building. 

The City is committed to maintaining and investing in public facilities like the YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce. This commitment reflects the City’s dedication to long-term infrastructure planning and to the people who use these spaces every day. The success of projects like this relies on strong relationships with community partners, and the YMCA is a key partner in ensuring this work is done with as little disruption to services as possible. 

Throughout the 6–8 week construction period, the City and YMCA are working closely with Spinton Roofing Ltd. to coordinate logistics and maintain as much access to YMCA services as possible. This includes: 

• Temporary access changes during skylight replacement 

• Aiming to keep at least one pool operational during work on roof drains 

• Clear signage and regular public updates to minimize disruption 

This project is part of the City’s broader commitment to enhancing community spaces through thoughtful capital planning and collaborative project delivery. These investments ensure that important community hubs like the YMCA remain safe, efficient, and welcoming for years to come.
