City Launches What Goes Where Waste App

The City of Owen Sound is proud to introduce ‘What Goes Where’, an interactive tool available on the City’s website and smartphone app, created by Recycle Coach. The What Goes Where feature makes it easier than ever for residents to sort their waste and optimize the use of the new green bin program.

Recycle Coach is the name of the software that the City is using to improve public knowledge about where to dispose of various household waste items.

The launch of this feature aligns with recommendation 7.2.10 of the 2023 Waste Management Strategy, which suggests developing a promotion and education strategy to support the expansion of household waste diversion from landfills. The full 2023 Waste Management Strategy is available on the City website OwenSound.ca/Waste, for more information.

With just over two weeks into the Green Bin program, nearly 7,800 residential units in Owen Sound have received Green Bins and kitchen catchers. In that time 23.55 tonnes of organic waste were collected, which is the equivalent of 15 mid-sized cars. Way to go Owen Sound!

Before rolling out the Green Bin program, the City conducted a pre-launch survey in which residents expressed their enthusiasm for organics collection, but many wanted more clarity on what materials can and cannot be included. This new tool answers that need!

With the ‘What Goes Where’ feature, residents can:

  • Type in the name of a material and get a list of possible matches and how to properly dispose of each item, or

  • Take a photo of an item using the app’s image recognition tool; perfect for things you’re not sure how to describe!

  • Get disposal instructions for the material in question, such as green bin, recycling, or garbage, as well as hazardous waste options, Goods Exchange Day ideas, and more.

  • Find drop-off locations for certain waste types.

  • Check garbage and recycling schedules by clicking on the link provided in the app, which directs you to the City’s GIS for waste collection.

Whether you’re trying to figure out what goes in the green bin, where to take old paint, or when your next collection day is, Recycle Coach puts that information at your fingertips. This tool can be accessed through the City’s website or a downloadable app for your smartphone or tablet.

With garbage bag tag prices set to increase, it’s more important than ever to reduce what you put in your garbage. Residents are encouraged to maximize waste diversion by recycling all accepted materials and utilizing the green bin program to its fullest extent.

Residents are reminded that Green Bins are picked up weekly, on the same day as your regular garbage collection day. Garbage Collection will remain every other week.

You can access the ‘What Goes Where’ feature by visiting the City’s Waste Management and Green Bin web pages or by downloading the Recycle Coach app directly.
