All Aboard the LEGO Chi-Cheemaun! Giant Ferry Model Docks in Owen Sound This Summer

A must-see summer attraction has arrived in downtown Owen Sound! Just in time for the tourism season, a massive LEGO replica of the iconic Chi-Cheemaun ferry is now on display at the Tom Thomson Art Gallery and Owen Sound Visitor Centre — and it's unlike anything you’ve seen before.

Created by local LEGO enthusiast Ken Reid — a proud AFOL (Adult Fan of LEGO) and beloved “Papa” to his grandchildren who call his creative world “Papa’s LEGO Land” — this incredible model is over nine feet long and built from more than 92,000 LEGO bricks. It features moving parts, over 50 vehicles, 620 mini-figures, and a stunning full interior that includes the vehicle deck, gift shop, cafeteria, captain’s bridge, passenger areas, and more. Every detail — right down to the ferry’s signature artwork — has been recreated brick by brick, using custom-designed vinyl replicating the distinctive colourful artwork on the ferry’s hull, bow, and stern.

Ken started this project in February 2025 and has spent over 600 hours recreating the “Big Canoe.” Building the hull was especially challenging, but a special invitation onboard the Chi-Cheemaun allowed him to capture every detail with hundreds of photographs.

The real Chi-Cheemaun connects Tobermory and Manitoulin Island each summer and spends its winters docked here in Owen Sound. The ferry’s name means “Big Canoe” in Ojibwe, and it is a cherished symbol of connection and community.
