    Owen Sound Chooses Collaboration Over Strong Mayor Powers

    As of May 1, the Province of Ontario has legislatively designated Owen Sound as a "Strong Mayor" municipality—one of 170 across the province. This designation grants the Mayor additional powers, including the ability to unilaterally hire and dismiss senior staff, prepare and submit the budget, and veto by-laws that conflict with provincial priorities.

    The City of Owen Sound is pleased to announce the 2025 Volunteer Award Recipients. On behalf of Owen Sound City Council, Mayor Ian Boddy, along with Chair of the Community Services Committee, Councillor Marion Keopke, and Bruce Grey Owen Sound MPP Paul Vickers, awards were presented at the beginning of the April 28 Council meeting.

    Plan to Attend the Home and Cottage Expo This Weekend at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre 

    The 2025 Home and Cottage Expo will be held at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre and JD McArthur Arena this weekend, Saturday, May 3, and Sunday, May 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

    The event will showcase 140 indoor exhibitors, including popular businesses across Ontario, interactive displays, local municipal building officials, a dedicated green energy section, 30 outdoor exhibitors, including outdoor furniture, sheds, equipment, vehicles, small home-based businesses, and a kids’ zone that includes pony rides, games, balloons and more!

    The City of Owen Sound is celebrating local innovators and entrepreneurs with a new economic development toolkit that highlights the amenities, opportunities, and sense of connectedness enjoyed by residents. 

    Available in both digital and print formats, the cinematic community profile invites potential residents and investors to spend time getting to know their future neighbours.  

  • Public Notice of Intention to Pass Amendment to the Fees and Charges By-law

    Please be advised that the Corporation of the City of Owen Sound intends to adopt an amendment to Fees and Charges By-law No. 2024-078, in accordance with subsection 391(1) of the Municipal Act, 2001, S.O. 2001, c. 25.

    The Fees and Charges By-law is being updated to:

    • Add fees related to derby camping; and
    • Amend fees related to civil marriages.

    The following staff reports are available on the City’s website and provide information on the amendment:

    The meeting at which the by-law will be presented will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, May 12, 2025, at City Hall, Council Chambers, 808 2nd Avenue East, Owen Sound, ON N4K 2H4.

    Notice is being provided in accordance with Notice By-law No. 2018-022.  If the matter is postponed or considered at a subsequent Council meeting, no additional notice will be provided other than the information on the subsequent Council agenda.

    Flags at City Facilities Half-Masted in Honour of National Day of Mourning

    Marked annually in Canada on April 28, the City of Owen Sound recognizes the National Day of Mourning to remember and honour those lives lost or injured due to a workplace tragedy. In honour of this day, flags at all City facilities (excluding City Hall’s community flagpole) are currently lowered to half-mast until the end of the day.

    City Honoured again as a 2024 Tree City of the World on Arbour Day

    Coinciding with Arbour Day, Owen Sound is thrilled to once again be recognized as a 2024 Tree City of the World by the Arbour Day Foundation and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Owen Sound is one of only 21 Canadian cities recognized, and one of only 210 cities worldwide.

    Household Hazardous Waste Event to Take Place this Saturday

    The first of eight Household Hazardous Waste Day events of 2025 is this Saturday, April 26! The event will be held at the Owen Sound Public Works Facility (1900 20th Street East) from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. 

    The complete schedule of Household Hazardous Waste Days in 2025 includes the following Saturdays: April 26, May 24, June 14, July 12, August 16, September 13, October 4, and October 25.

    When attending the events, and to help keep the line moving as quickly as possible, residents are asked to bring valid ID indicating that their home address is in one of the participating municipalities listed below and bring a filled-out Household Hazardous Waste Form. The form can be printed at home and is available on the City’s website at OwenSound.ca/WasteForm.

    This very popular program is open to residents from the following participating partner municipalities:

    • City of Owen Sound
    • Township of Chatsworth
    • Township of Georgian Bluffs
    • Municipality of Grey Highlands
    • Municipality of Meaford

    A full list of accepted materials is available at OwenSound.ca/Waste. Please note that the following is not accepted:

    • Infectious wastes (such as syringes)
    • Radioactive wastes
    • Explosives (ammunition, flares, gunpowder)
    • Unidentified waste (unlabeled items)
    • Improperly contained waste (compromised containers, missing lids, leaking materials)

    Residents are reminded that improperly contained waste, such as compromised containers, missing lids, and leaking materials, should never be transported. They pose a health and safety risk and will not be accepted. Before bringing the original container to the site, safely place it in a clean, labelled container.

    Earth Day Celebration Road Closure on Saturday, April 26

    Earth Day Grey Bruce is hosting a community Earth Day event on Saturday, April 26. To accommodate the festivities, the 800 block of 1st Avenue West will be fully closed to vehicular traffic from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
