The Heritage Register is an inventory of properties of cultural heritage value or interest. It contains both properties designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act and those not designated but that Council believes to be of heritage value.
Heritage Designation is meant to:
- recognize the importance of a property to the local community;
- protect the property’s cultural heritage value;
- encourage good stewardship and conservation; and
- promote knowledge and understanding about the property.
Help Council track alterations to designated properties. This streamlined process allows staff to approve projects which protect the heritage attributes of these buildings.
Heritage Conservation Districts
A Heritage Conservation District (HCD) is an area with a group or complex of buildings, or a larger area with many buildings and properties. District designation enables the council of a municipality to manage and guide future change in the district through adoption of a district plan with policies and guidelines for conservation, protection and enhancement of the area’s special character. At present the City of Owen Sound does not have a HCD. City staff will work with the Downtown Improvement Area and neighbourhood groups who are interested in this process. The Ministry of Tourism & Culture provides additional information in their Heritage Tool Kit.
