Harrison Park PlaygroundA Partnership between the City of Owen Sound and Kiwanis Club of Owen Sound.
This past June, a collaborative project between the City of Owen Sound and the Kiwanis Club of Owen Sound, “Harrison Park Playground for ALL”, was awarded a $44,400 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). Harrison Park is well-known and well-used by people from surrounding communities. The design of the new playground has no physical barriers and will benefit all local children. As well, features are included to address the needs of adults with disabilities who may visit the playground such as accessible picnic and game tables. As part of Phase Two of the project, OTF funding will be used to purchase a duo swings set, and sway-sets as well as protective surfacing for the swings. The City of Owen Sound is preparing the site and completing the hard landscaping during Phase 1. “Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child at a time,” states Kiwanis Governor Gary Levine. “The Kiwanis Playground Project in Harrison Park fits our mandate to a tee. Our club has committed to raise $200,000 over five years. That’s a lot of money in increasingly tough times. I don’t think that we could meet our goal without the help of the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Their support is exactly what we need to help fulfill our dream.” Located in Owen Sound since 1925, the Kiwanis Club of Owen Sound has been committed to giving back to the community using their time, energy, and experience. The Harrison Park Playground for ALL is a collaborative between the Kiwanis Club of Owen Sound, as lead applicant, and the City of Owen Sound as the property owner of the park. Both groups have a history of strong partnerships and community success, as evident when they worked together to create Owen Sound’s first fully accessible playground at J. Irvine Brown Park. |
