Doors Open Ontario is a province-wide celebration of community heritage designed to create access, awareness and excitement about our heritage. Doors Open provides residents and visitors alike with a unique opportunity to explore and enjoy sometimes hidden and always interesting places within our community - all free of charge.

The City of Owen Sound participated in Doors Open for the first time in 2003. With sponsorship assistance from community-minded businesses, 20 sites in and around Owen Sound opened their doors on June 14 and 15, 2003. As a first-year event, Doors Open Owen Sound was a resounding success drawing close to 4,500 visits through its doors and sites.

Owen Sound will once again be hosting Doors Open on June 5 and6, 2010. Many exciting events are planned.

“Art in the Garden” returns this year at Highland Manor Inn Grand Victorian Bed & Breakfast, highlighting works of various local artists.

Help celebrate Billy Bishop Days by visiting the Billy Bishop Home & Museum, the boyhood home of William Avery Bishop, VC, CB, DSO.

Visit Inglis Falls with its spectacular 18-metre high cascade.

From gardens to gables, museums to mansions, Doors Open Owen Sound provides everyone with an opportunity to enjoy the sites of cultural, historical, environmental or architectural significance in and around the City.

Beth Ezekiel Synagogue

Beth Ezekiel Synagogue
Year Built: 1903
First occupied by the Calvary Church, this building has been home to the Synagogue since 1946. Named for Ezekiel Cadesky, a Russian immigrant who settled here in the early 1900s, the structure draws from the tradition of simple, turn-of-the-century Georgian meeting halls. Recently added intricate stained glass windows tell the story of many member families. NEW for 2010: recently unveiled Holocaust Memorial.

Between The Maples B&B
Year Built: 1906
Nestled among mature maples, this B&B is a comfortable century home with a view of Georgian Bay. The architectural features of the interior have been preserved during second story renovations. Divided in half by a double brick wall, the home has two staircases. Art Exhibition: by Steve Young.

Billy Bishop Home & Museum - A National Historic Site
Year Built: 1884
The boyhood home of First and Second World War flying ace William Avery Bishop, VC, CB DSO. A well-preserved example of the Queen Anne Revival style, the house has an eclectic mix of architectural styles, featuring asymmetrical proportions, a variety of window shapes and decorative millwork. Celebrate Veteran’s Commemoration Day, see the Veteran's Parade, “Leave No Man Behind” Exhibit opening and 65th Anniversary of V-E Day.

Central Westside United Church

Central Westside United Church
Year Built: 1910
Built originally as Westside Methodist Church at its present location at a cost of $28,000, the building remains much the same as it was a century ago. Built with Renaissance proportions in the Akron Style and constructed of local period materials, since original construction, a verandah has been added to the north eastern entrance, and a wheelchair ramp constructed onto the westerly entrance. The pipe organ dates from 1910. NEW for 2010: organ recital by Richard Smith.

Former Christian Science Society/Congregational Church

Former Christian Science Society/Congregational Church
Year Built: 1871
Built of native stone cut on site in 1871 as a Congregational Church, this is thought to be the oldest existing church building in the City. In 1902 the church was sold to the Women’s Christian Temperance Union as a meeting hall. The Lutheran Church bought it in 1942, and in 1963 it was purchased by the Christian Science Society. It was sold to private interests in 2006.

Year Built: 1931
CNR built this station in 1931 to replace the original Grand Trunk Railway Station. Passenger service continued until November 1, 1970 when the final train left and service ended. The former waiting area and main foyer had a separate waiting room for women and children. The CNR Station stands today as a landmark serving as the central hub for tourism, housing the Owen Sound Marine & Rail Museum and the Owen Sound Visitor Information Centre.

Former Station Hotel

Former Station Hotel
Year Built: 1897
The property was owned by the Lyons family from 1873 until 1942; this building was built circa 1897. Located across from the Canadian Pacific Railway, it served as a boarding house for sailors and trainmen, and as overflow waiting for those travelling the train south from Owen Sound. A restaurant often occupied the first floor. Modern uses include repair shop, retail store, dance and art studio, and now home to SailorJones Media. 2010 events include artist Sharon Barfoot, performances by Beckon, screening of Fundamental Freedoms, and video interviews of your stories.

Great Lake International Marine Training Centre, Georgian College
Year Built: 2008
Described as an “IMAX theatre on steroids”, the Great Lakes International Marine Training Centre at the Owen Sound campus of Georgian College, features the most advanced marine training simulators in the country. Visitors will receive semi-guided tours of the $8.5 million facility, which includes a Class ‘A’ Simulator that displays 360 degree images of nearly any port in the world.

Greenwood Cemetery & Mausoleum
Year Built: 1927
Greenwood Cemetery, surrounded by tall stately maples and cedar hedges, is situated atop a wooded ravine at the City’s south west corner. The site contains a residence, one of the oldest homes in the City, now used as the office. A Mausoleum built in 1927 is clad in Indiana Limestone with Italian marble interior and impressive stained glass windows. Only cemetery in Canada to contain 3 Victoria Cross recipients.

Highland Manor Inn Bed & Breakfast
Year Built: 1872
Originally known as the Fleming House, the 7,500 sq. ft Highland Manor Inn, now a bed & breakfast, is one of the finest examples of High Victorian architecture in Canada. The builders strove to establish a feeling of grandeur through the use of Roman arches, a striking façade and windows, and non-matching dormers of varying sizes that grace the almost 50 foot-high structure. Art in the Garden features paintings, jewellery, fiber art, woodwork, metal sculpture, masks and more.

Inglis Falls

Year Built: 1862
Situated on the outskirts of Owen Sound in the heart of Inglis Falls Conservation Area, the Sydenham River cascades 18 metres over the edge of the Niagara Escarpment. See remains of former water flume, grinding stones and stone building, part of a grist, saw and woollen mill complex. Take advantage of the opportunity to view the Inglis Falls Filtration Plant, part of Trails Open. These unique underground caverns were built in 1910. All the water was filtered here and then gravity fed into the valley for the residents to use in their homes. The filtration beds were decommissioned in 1969. Meet us at the pavilion for your guided tour.

Jean Francis Art Studio

Year Built: 1894
This quaint block and brick building rests on the banks of the Sydenham River. In 1894 the Crown patented the lands along the river's edge, in trust, to the Town of Owen Sound provided the Town lease the lands for $1.00 per year. Over the years it has been a dry cleaners, shoe repair shop and residence, and is now an artist’s studio, which has recently undergone a façade improvement. Jean Francis will showcase her artwork.

Morland Place

Built by the McCallum family in 1920, what is now the prestigious Morland Place was originally a small country cottage-style home. The expansion at the rear was modeled as a reproduction of 1870s Regency Georgian Villa style architecture. The gardens with concrete statues and benches are of a European “architectural” style.

Mudtown Pottery

Year Built: 1922
In 1922 the Division Street Church congregation built Northcliffe Mission to serve the poorest neighbourhood in Owen Sound, an area known as Mudtown. After the Mission dissolved, it was used for civic purposes until the Boy Scouts assumed ownership. The building is now home to Kate McLaren's Mudtown Pottery, hosting pottery classes, a shop and an exhibition and performance hall. NEW for 2010: Origins, an Artists Around the Sound exhibition features work by 11 artists, including paintings, stained glass, pottery, furniture, woven goods and carvings.

Year Built: 1914
Library service was founded in Owen Sound in 1855, originally as a Mechanics’ Institute. The Carnegie Public Library was completed in 1914 with a grant from the Carnegie Foundation and was thoughtfully restored in 2003. An addition was built in 1972. This full service library meets the needs of the City as well as surrounding municipalities.

Roxy Theatre

Year Built: 1912
Initially built as an opera house known as The Grand Opera House, the building was later renovated into a cinema. The last film to be shown was “A Coalminer’s Daughter”. Through the work of the Owen Sound Little Theatre, the Roxy Theatre has become a centre for amateur theatrical productions.

St. George's Anglican Church

St. George's Anglican Church
Year Built: 1881
The church was designed by Architect A. B. Aylesworth of Toronto and built by contractor Reuben E. Traux of Walkerton. The corner stone was laid on May 12, 1881, and the church was opened August 7, 1881. Fashioned after the renowned St. Mary's of Bristol, England, St. George's is unlike the typical English great church, with the tower located on the side elevation, where the nave and transept walls meet, and also serves as the main entrance. Otherwise, the church is laid out in the typical cruciform style of Early Victorian Gothic Revival.

Tom Thomson Art Gallery

Tom Thomson Art Gallery
Year Built: 1965
This Gallery houses the world’s third largest collection of Thomson’s works and is the only gallery designated as a Thomson memorial. Thomson, who grew up in Owen Sound, and the Group of Seven had a distinctive approach to portraying Canadian landscape in the early 20th century. Visit the gallery and celebrate Thomson’s legacy.

Wilkinson House

Wilkinson House
Year Built: 1912
Built in 1912 for a local shoe store owner, this recently restored example of an Edwardian period structure has many characteristic elements of late Queen Anne style on the exterior and both Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau styles in its interior décor (Miller work, sculpted newel post figurine, built-in sideboard). It is presently used as a law office.
