Emerald Ash Borer Alert
Ash trees are a significant species in the City’s urban forest, which includes trees on private as well as public lands within the City. Like many Ontario municipalities, Owen Sound faces a threat to its Ash tree population. The exotic, invasive insect pest Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) has infested many Ash trees throughout Southern Ontario. In the spring of 2014, with the potential threat of this pest, Owen Sound City Council approved the Emerald Ash Borer Management Plan to reduce and mitigate the impact of EAB. The first step in the EAB Management Plan is a complete inventory and assessment of the City’s Ash trees, to better understand the true management costs for selective treatment and removal of publicly-owned Ash trees.
Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) Workshop
The EAB working group for Grey and Bruce Counties is composed of representatives from the County of Bruce, County of Grey, City of Owen Sound, Grey Sauble Conservation, Saugeen Conservation, Ministry of Natural Resources & Forestry, and the Bruce Peninsula National Park. This group is sponsoring four public workshops
throughout the two Counties to provide residents with up-to-date information about this exotic invasive insect. The workshops are being sponsored by Bruce Power – two workshops will be held in March, and two workshops will be
held in June.
Topics to be covered at each workshop include: EAB biology, signs & symptoms & current research; EAB presence in Grey & Bruce Counties; the cultural significance of ash trees to First Nations; ash management options; ash disposal options; and protecting ash trees through inoculations.
