Location
The City of Owen Sound's Greenwood Cemetery is located on about 40 acres
of land on the south westerly outskirts of the city. Surrounded by tall,
stately maples and cedar hedges, a heavily wooded ravine runs diagonally
through the centre of the cemetery. It is a traditional cemetery with
areas for both upright memorials and flat markers. The original house
is now used as a cemetery office; a maintenance complex for storing grounds
equipment is located behind the house.

History
Greenwood Cemetery opened to the public in 1854. In 1927, a Mausoleum
was constructed on the grounds. Its exterior is covered in Indiana Limestone
and the interior is finished with Italian Marble. The Mausoleum features
several beautiful stained glass windows and has a large centre chapel
for use during the winter months.

A section of the cemetery west of the Mausoleum was developed and landscaped
in 1962. Known as the Memorial Gardens, flowering crab trees and evergreen
shrubs are planted throughout the section. A small cemetery chapel, which
has most recently been used as a workshop and office, will be undergoing
future restoration.

Regulations
All cemeteries in Ontario are regulated by the Ministry of Consumer and
Commercial Relations. The regulations set forth in the Cemeteries Act
ensure the rights of the public are protected.
Separate from the provincial regulations, each cemetery is allowed to
set its own by-laws governing its operations. The focus of the by-laws
is to ensure the cemetery is run effectively; the by-laws must be approved
by the Ministry of Consumer & Commercial Relations.
